Where in the world has Obleo been?, he been missing for an while. Well I been working on making some fun little indy games for iOS.
They taken some time to build because I have actually cared about how they looked, play and worked.
The first of 4 games I been working on (Yes 4, its the artwork that taking some major time.) has finally landed in the app store for iOS called Pop Tone. This game was an idea floating in my head for 2 years before I sat down and programmed out how it was going to work and look for iOS.
The game started out with one type of play, but later in the development cycle it came up that I should have an number of different game types (Kind of like Tilt 2 Live has). I went on to design and program over 30 game types and sent them to testers. Later it was narrowed down to 3 very strong game modes (Called Pop Pop Pop, Pop Down and Pop Out).
I also did not want to make an level based game. Once you finish all the levels your done playing and there no more fun. I was looking for an pass and play, where you can play with an group of friends and have some challenging casual fun.
I personally have bought 2985 iOS games to date. Some of the major things that bugged me about most of the games I have played where.
1) Controls that do not work for the device. This was the #1 thing That I focused on, it had to feel natural to play on the device.
2) No sound. We have sound, by Mojo Audio.
3) No Help (yes believe it many game have no help what so ever?) Well I added help and with pictures.
4) No Top Score List. (Yes keeping track of the score is fun) I added that and for every game type.
5) Selection of difficulty. (Some games are to hard and some are to easy) I decided to give 3 different difficulty selections so it fun for more than just one type of person.
6) Saving when quitting the game. (This is actually the biggest annoying thing with most games I played. Many do not save at all. Then many that do save, still do not save where you quit the game.) In Pop Tone I made it so it saves where you quit the game.
The game has an really simple concept to play. Match color orbs to the background color of the game board to score points. Well that sounds simple but the colors do change and often which is the challenging part. Multitouch is the big key to score high with Pop Tone. Another tip is to keep an eye that the orb your popping still the right move. It was an ton of fun developing this game. Had many friends playing along the way of building it.
In the last hour of the first day Pop Tone went on the market an good friend said hey where your game trailer? HUH !? what, game trailer. He said iOS games that do good have game trailers. Then I spent the day (36 hours straight) making an game trailer. And that is what has me posting back to where the world is Obleo. Because I like posting videos, even ones I make. So check out this video. It may look cheesy, but it my first official game trailer, hopefully not the last.
The trailer was made with Screenflow. I just bought it this week and it is awesome tool.
The game was made with Livecode for iOS. And it was an roll your own.
