Poll Everywhere, free with Posterous

The crew at Posterous just keeps quietly adding cool little things like this that make there brand the right choose for basically anything. I am not sure If I like polls, there kind of cheesy, to me. I do imagine they can be very useful for many others. Great job.

UNITY 2.6 Is now Free!!!

In the most shocking move in history. Unity Indie licenses is now free. publish to the web, mac and PC for nothing. The indie version was $199. But as of now It is completely FREE!!!

The only really bad news is if you where like us and had the indie version of unity pre the new licensing of 2.6 and have the iPhone basic. And want to use Unity to publish to the iPhone. Pre October 27th 2009 it cost $699.00 total in annually updating the tools to do that with unity. Now it going to cost 10 times the amount money it did Pre October 27th to publish with the iPhone using Unity. Why? Because a very expensive pro license is now required.

That is really really bad news, consider we make less money with iphone builds than desktop builds. (19.99 a title desktop to under 4.99 a title iPhone is a major difference, specially when 40% of that skimmed off the top of the under 4.99 price point. Then add the mix of production cost and it hard to stay out of the red with mobile publishing.)

If your an indy developer or small shop these 3rd party over priced licenses to build out to the iPhone, are really become ridiculously over priced. It makes no more since to use any development tools besides Apples SDK and xcode. Unless your a huge company and making big profits of selling mobile apps for peanuts in price points.

Well go get the free unity It worth it. Not because it free, because it awesome and just works.

For the iPhone I guess it time to switch back to xcode. Now that it cost $1,101.00 more than yesterday. Because it now requires the pro version licenses to update (will be $2000.00, Total, annually!) to use Unity to build out to the iPhone.

rejoice unity is free to some degree. The bad half just means, hello xcode good bye Unity iPhone publishing.

Update; if the people that commented below are actually unity staff, then it might be true that unity iPhone may not need a pro license. (I hope so) Why it worded like it should is beyond me? I have to send in a support email. as I will only believe the one person that help us with all our unity questions up to this point. As our free updates are over, for our current license #.

Animation

DerBrill Multimedia today released AE 3 for runrev. With some amazing new commands like: aeChangeHeight, aeChangeWidth, aeChangeRect, aeChangeHScroll , aeChangeVScroll and a few others to an already valuable library.

If you haven't used it or seen the new version of Animation Engine. I highly suggest checking it out. It has a 14 day try out. more info @ http://www.runrev.com/products/related-software/animation-engine-2/

added: I found out if your only upgrading from a past version it cost only $39 USD to upgrade. For That price I renew asap to the new version. After a day of using the new commands, It's worth not passing up. I use AE for mostly User experience and the new addtions work well for that.

try ruby! (in your browser)

Got 15 minutes? Give Ruby a shot right now!

Ruby is a programming language from Japan (available at ruby-lang.org) which is revolutionizing the web. The beauty of Ruby is found in its balance between simplicity and power.

Try out Ruby code in the prompt above. In addition to Ruby's builtin methods, the following commands are available:

  • help Start the 15 minute interactive tutorial. Trust me, it's very basic!
  • help 2 Hop to chapter two.
  • clear Clear screen. Useful if your browser starts slowing down. Your command history will be remembered.
  • back Go back one screen in the tutorial.
  • reset Reset the interpreter if you get too deep. (or Ctrl-D!)
  • time A stopwatch. Prints the time your session has been open.

If you happen to leave or refresh the page, your session will still be here for unless it is left inactive for ten minutes.

This is a cool teaching /learning concept model. Try it out @ http://tryruby.hobix.com/

Evernote, Remember Everything.

Evernote allows you to easily capture information in any environment using whatever device or platform you find most convenient, and makes this information accessible and searchable at any time, from anywhere.

This cross platform solution is absolute genius. Know how many times I been referencing for something saved the content as a pdf saved it to my machine and then tried to figure out where that info I found was located. With Evernote they fix this problem of finding info that you saved. They make it even simple to collect that info and manage it. Best of all you can collect the info from a smart phone, your desktop or the web. Best of all it free to use.

Screencasts

It's been a full month that I have used screencast.com pro service. With in that month I uploaded 20 videos ranging from 3 minutes to 30 minutes. Had a total of 22,367 viewers and didn't even put a dent into the bandwidth or storage limits of 250 GB (used under 3gb in traffic). It is a thumbs up for 9.99 a month. Best of all I like how I can pick witch content is password protected and what is not. If your looking into a video content service you really should check out these guys. The tech support is great, great price and simple to use.
