Additionally a number of improvements and bug fixes were implemented to smooth out some of the issues experienced by Unity (free) license holders. Additionally, Unity 2.6.1 projects are now compatible with Unity iPhone 1.5.1 projects.

Improvements:

  • The Mac webplayer has been rewritten to be compatible with 64-bit Safari on Mac OS X 10.6.

  • Fixed ImportAssetOptions.ImportRecursive (it didn't do anything before).
  • Fixed a bug where the terrain lightmapper would render shadows incorrectly.

  • Fixed warning when deleting a TerrainData asset which is used in the scene.
  • Fixed a bug in which Input.GetMouseButton() would fail in the Editor on Windows, when the game view is detached from the main window.

  • Fixed an Editor crash when pressing the gear menu on the default references of a script on Windows.
  • Editor Search string now resets when objects not matching the search filter are selected.
  • Unity will now highlight prefabs in Project view when selecting the prefab from the GameObject Inspector.

Runtime Fixes:

  • Fixed a runtime crash when changing screen size or FSAA settings when RenderTexture assets are used.

GameSalad Creator Drops Price

Another tool, GameSalad has drop there price. The once ridiculous fee of $500 for Express is now $99. Game Salad free for web publishing and now just $99 for iPhone Publishing.

The only thing is GameSalad is not a real programming tool. Personally I like programing with code. As you can do anything you want to, and it really pretty simple once you learn the syntax. GameSalad as reviewed a few months ago in this blog is like automator. The news here is another tool, has drop its ridiculous price. Specially consider GameSalad not a real programming tool. It more of just a publisher.

I hope any other development tools entering this realm soon of mobile publishing takes notice of these new price points. And comes down to reality.

UNITY 2.6 Is now Free!!!

In the most shocking move in history. Unity Indie licenses is now free. publish to the web, mac and PC for nothing. The indie version was $199. But as of now It is completely FREE!!!

The only really bad news is if you where like us and had the indie version of unity pre the new licensing of 2.6 and have the iPhone basic. And want to use Unity to publish to the iPhone. Pre October 27th 2009 it cost $699.00 total in annually updating the tools to do that with unity. Now it going to cost 10 times the amount money it did Pre October 27th to publish with the iPhone using Unity. Why? Because a very expensive pro license is now required.

That is really really bad news, consider we make less money with iphone builds than desktop builds. (19.99 a title desktop to under 4.99 a title iPhone is a major difference, specially when 40% of that skimmed off the top of the under 4.99 price point. Then add the mix of production cost and it hard to stay out of the red with mobile publishing.)

If your an indy developer or small shop these 3rd party over priced licenses to build out to the iPhone, are really become ridiculously over priced. It makes no more since to use any development tools besides Apples SDK and xcode. Unless your a huge company and making big profits of selling mobile apps for peanuts in price points.

Well go get the free unity It worth it. Not because it free, because it awesome and just works.

For the iPhone I guess it time to switch back to xcode. Now that it cost $1,101.00 more than yesterday. Because it now requires the pro version licenses to update (will be $2000.00, Total, annually!) to use Unity to build out to the iPhone.

rejoice unity is free to some degree. The bad half just means, hello xcode good bye Unity iPhone publishing.

Update; if the people that commented below are actually unity staff, then it might be true that unity iPhone may not need a pro license. (I hope so) Why it worded like it should is beyond me? I have to send in a support email. as I will only believe the one person that help us with all our unity questions up to this point. As our free updates are over, for our current license #.

Webkit adds support for WebGL

Web kit developers have started to add GPU-accelerated 3D via WebGL into the open source browser engine. WebGL is a JavaScript binding to Open ES 2.0

This will eliminate the need for plug-ins to implement 3D graphics. To enable WebGL manually change settings ( ENABLE_3D_CANVAS = ENABLE_3D_CANVAS in WebCore/Configurations/FeatureDefines.xcconfig)

Manual test data@ http://svn.webkit.org/repository/webkit/trunk/WebCore/manual-tests/webgl/

pretty cool, if you ask me.

GameSalad, Simple game creation for iPhone and Web

Do not understand programing? Do not worry. GameSalad is an Automator type creation tool for games and animation. Interesting concept, and it works. It can be used by traditional programers as a truly rapid prototyping tool. Or by anyone as designed. A simple to use, game creation tool. Web base games need a plug in.

iPhone publishing is just around the corner. (Here the first live iPhone game made with GameSalad, below)

What ever the needs you have, This tool could become very useful.  Playing around and testing this product, was and has been truly amazing and fun. Start with a template and play around just as if you where using Automator and make something. One click publishing. with embed tags to put anywhere.

(Below are a few more, screens of the gameSalad interface)

Here is a video I found on youTube that speaks for it self.

If you are a programer looking for prototying. A gamer looking to make your own game, or just curious. I recomend checking out GameSalad. It is a great tool for any need. It is also fun toying around with. Check it out. It currently only works on OS X 10.5 or later with an Intel Processor.

Program your Website in Plain English

When I first heard of On-Rev from a great Rev Mentor post, I was curious. When I saw a webinar, I wanted it ASAP. So what is this? On-Rev is a new web service from Runtime Revolution. It's hosting yes, but it a bit more beyond that. The real deal here is you can do server side scripting in the easy to learn Revolution syntax. (that plain english like, small-talk like scripting)

Personally I just began experimenting with on-rev as I just signed up for it a few days ago. From my first sample test, this will change everything for a desktop programmer like me. I am not a web guy, I do not pretend to be a web guy. From what i've done so far I was able to program as I would in a desktop programming environment, and start hammering out high quality web class apps.

When a such a revolutionary thing like this comes out and allows some one who a desktop app / game developer to move on into the realm of high class web apps, with no new syntax learning. It gets one high review from me. I am pretty amazed by it. I give two thumbs up to everyone at Runtime Revolution and On-Rev for building this great thing.

I highly recommend this (on-rev) to all desktop developers and you web guys to. There still one day left of there founders deal of a life time. To get in on the ground floor and save some real money in the long run. I just got an email today from the head honcho Kevin Miller at Runtime Revolution and they now have some video showcasing what you can do with the On-Rev scripting. Worth taking a journey over to there On-Rev site for more info.

I hope to have my domains in place by next week (there still transfering) I will post a link to what a desktop developer guy can do on the web with On-Rev. I never though I could do stuff on the web like this, within only a few days. Thanks to Runtime Revolution and On-Rev, I can. Pretty cool stuff. (once I have the web tagging info down pat and in my head. I think I could cut a few days into a few minutes. Well maybe hours?)

Check it out @ http://www.on-rev.com/revolution/overview/
